The town of Aalst (or Aaslt in Dutch) is located in the Flemish region of Belgium. The town is famous for its Carnival, but the rest of the year is also well worth a visit. You'll find some wonderful spots, like the street opposite the station that leads to an Art Deco quarter, with a few Viennese-style houses (Jugendstil) or the Belfry (UNESCO World Heritage Site) next to the aldermen's house.
Make sure you finish your visit by buying an "aalste vlaai" from one of the city's good bakeries: this speculoos-based dessert is a real treat.
- Weekly market on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm
- Annual St Martin's market (timber market)
- Large supermarket just 15 minutes' walk away. Here you'll find a wide range of shops and restaurants, including typical Belgian chip shops and fast-food outlets. But also supermarkets, clothes shops, sports shops and much more.
