Historically, Blois was the capital of the county of Blois, created in 956 and held by the eponymous house until it became part of the royal domain in 1397. The town has preserved an important cultural heritage, including its castle, Saint-Louis cathedral, Saint-Nicolas church and the Jacques-Gabriel bridge. Blois is also the centre of the Blésois natural region, a name also given to the town's inhabitants.
